And some Canberra businesses are actively encouraging players by paying to lay down "lures" for Pokemon during busy times.

Most institutions are enjoying the influx of people, while the Australian War Memorial has asked for respect when people play on its grounds.

The memorial, at which the rare Pikachu can apparently be found, said it had not experienced "disruption" from any influx of players.

But a spokesman said they would expect any visitors would "recognise the importance of the role we play in honouring the men and women who served our nation, and act in a respectful and appropriate manner".

As the site of several Pokestops – where players can pick up items to use in the game – Questacon has turned into a meet-up hotspot.

Jared Wilkins, acting director science and learning, said there were nightly gatherings out the front of Questacon's lakeside centre – and sometimes lunchtime too – with groups of more than 100 people.

"It's great to see people engaging with science and technology in this way," Mr Wilkins said. "One of the things I'm hoping is that by taking part in this activity is [people] may start to think about, this device that I have in my hand … what other sorts of things is it capable of?"

It's perhaps Canberra's busiest Pokemon site, but Mr Wilkins said the app had not caused problems so far, except for some instances where people had parked in no stopping zones.

The National Library said it welcomed people to the library, while the Arboretum said it had several children come by playing the game.

Some businesses are actively trying to catch Pokemon Go players.

The Old Bus Depot markets has promised to drop lures every half hour between 10am and 4pm this Sunday. The lures, which players can purchase for about $1.50, encourage Pokemon to turn up nearby, making them easier to catch.

A barber in Belconnen, Michael Daskalakis, has also been using lures to bring people to his Boys 2 Men hair studio. As an added bonus, he's offering Pokemon-themed hair cuts.

Mr Daskalakis said he and his staff had been pumped for the game's release since hearing about it last year. A Pokemon fan himself, Mr Daskalakis has laid some lures around his barber shop, "for us, as well as the clients while they're waiting".

Though someone from the studio posted a Pokemon hairstyle photo on a local Facebook group on Wednesday, Mr Daskalakis says he's not surprised people had not yet come in for one of their own.

"It's one of those things. It's not exactly like a tattoo but you've got to walk around with it in your hair. People really appreciate it, they see they art in it, [but] I don't blame them [if they don't go through with it]."
