Police were called to Goodenia Street, Rivett, after reports of a disturbance about 5.25am. They believe the man, who has yet to be identified, went to the house seeking help.
Detective Station Sergeant Matthew Reynolds said officers provided first aid and paramedics also tried to save him. The man died at the scene..
Sergeant Reynolds said residents of the house he had gone to for help were not involved with the man's death.
"What we can say in relation to the location where the male was located is that he is not from that address. And it appears that he has made his way to that location to seek assistance," he said.
"We are still trying to identify the man and work out where he resides."
Sergeant Reynolds could not say why or how the man died, but he ruled out the man had been shot.
"It is too early to say what caused his injuries. We are certainly treating them as suspicious. ... There is a lot of work to be done at this stage to determine the cause of death of this person."
No arrests have been made.
Police did not believe the death was related to bikie gangs and said members of the public were not at risk.
A 50 metre section of Goodenia Street at the Casuarina Street end was closed off with police tape on Sunday afternoon. It is expected to remain closed off until Monday.
Homicide detectives removed items, including a baseball bat, from a white car parked in a corner of the nearby Noah's Ark Family and Community Centre carpark in Bangalay Crescent.
Resident Troy Osborn, who lives in a nearby street, which he said was normally quiet, woke to his dog barking about 5.30am.
"I ended up nodding off and woke up to police knocking on the door about 7.45," he said.
"It's a bit scary, I've got my boy coming to stay for a week," he said.

Another nearby resident, who did not want to be named, said he also woke about 5.30am.
"I've looked out my back gate and saw two guys walking towards a white car parked in the carpark."
Police removed evidence in bags from the area and laid out yellow forensics markers across the road and on two driveways.
Sergeant Reynolds called for any witnesses who noticed suspicious activity or people near Goodenia Street between 3am and 6am to contact Crime Stoppers.
He also urged anyone with CCTV or dashcam footage of the area at that time to come forward.
