Speeding, drink-driving and driver fatigue will be targeted by members of ACT Policing and NSW Police as they work together on Operation Snow Safe, due to begin on Saturday.
Drivers need to be prepared for sudden changes in road and weather conditions as they make their way to the snowfields, Officer in Charge of Traffic Operations Sergeant Rod Anderson said.
“Drivers need to be aware of seasonal drops in temperature typically experienced during the winter months, which can potentially result in hazardous weather and conditions such as fog, high winds, snow or ice on the roads,” Sergeant Rod Anderson said.
“These conditions can cause minimal visibility on our roads, and can present a real danger when motorists don’t adapt their driving appropriately.”
Operation Snow Safe will run from Saturday until Monday, October 10.
Double demerit penalties are also in place from Friday to Monday, June 10 inclusive, a period which saw ACT Policing issue 181 Traffic Infringement Notices in 2012. Officers also conducted 1,533 random roadside breath tests with 12 people recording positive results over the long weekend last year.
