The recent packed meeting at Llewellyn Hall at ANU approved the statement, calling for a more humane and tolerant policy to be adopted.
Organisers of the Refugee Action Committee say at least two Labor MPs – Melissa Parke and former speaker Anna Burke – will receive the statement, along with Greens senators and Independents.
“The statement we are presenting to parliamentarians represents the view that many, many Canberrans have, that it is crucial we adopt a more humane and tolerant policy on asylum seekers and refugees and reject the current policy,” associate professor in politics and international relations at the ANU, John Minns, said.
