Police were called to a unit complex in Discovery Street following reports of a disturbance around 9.20am.
Initial reports were that one man was armed with a knife, prompting the closure of nearby streets while specialist response teams arrived on the scene.
All streets with access to Discovery Street in Red Hill were closed off, in addition to Monaro Crescent, La Perouse Street and Cygnet Crescent.
Officers wearing bulletproof vests maintained a cordon during the standoff, escorting one Red Hill resident to her home to retrieve her children.
The cordon was lifted at approximately 12.30pm and the majority of officers left the scene.
An ACT Policing spokeswoman said no arrests had been made and no-one had been taken in to custody, but investigations were continuing.
A number of officers remained at the scene as of 1pm, but the spokeswoman said there was no danger to residents.
