Last year, the Director of Public Prosecutions Jon White, SC, told an assembly committee the DPP and Supreme Court's workloads had doubled in recent years and Canberra's growing population had led to more complex serious criminal cases requiring prosecution.

"We have had major drug conspiracies, and a big fraud matter that ran for eight weeks during the reporting period," he told the committee.

"A lot more complex cases are coming before the superior court.

"So we really do need to free up junior legal staff to assist in those matters and also to run the summary hearings in the Magistrates Court where most of the family violence matters, for example, get determined."

In its report released last Friday, the Standing Committee on Justice and Community Safety has urged the territory government to "prioritise" and commission a review of the resourcing arrangements for the Office of the DPP.

It also urged the government to report back to the committee on the findings of the review within three months after it is completed.

The committee also noted the "consistent advice" from witnesses calling for extra funding for the DPP to complete its work, but stopped short of attaching a specific figure to its recommendation that "funding for the Office of the DPP should reflect the important functions of the Office".

Attorney-General Gordon Ramsay said a review was "already under way", but did not detail specifically when it began.

"The review will provide advice to government on a way forward in supporting the DPP, to ensure that we are able to keep providing first rate services as Canberra grows," he said.

While the latest ACT budget gave the DPP an extra $3 million, much of that money was expected to be spent on the long-running re-trial of David Eastman that was recently re-scheduled for next year.

But Mr Ramsay said the government also gave the DPP an extra $771,000 over four years for one extra prosecutor to join the office, on top of the DPP's base funding and the money for the Eastman re-trial.

The legislative committee also urged the government to "at least" maintain baseline funding for Legal Aid ACT, given its own rising workload.

The report, which examined annual reports across the justice directorate, also made a series of other recommendations to government, including that it consider creating an official offence for bail breaches in the ACT, as such an offence does not currently exist.

It also called on the government to increase the accommodation for female detainees at the Alexander Maconochie Centre, start a planning for the rising number of ageing inmates at the prison, and ensure funding to ACT Policing ensures that "value in real terms is at least maintained".
