The owner of a brood of chickens decapitated in a Melba backyard over the weekend has described the brutal killing as shocking.

An RSPCA ACT spokesman said the owner, who has remained anonymous at this stage, was "clearly upset" and had released a statement about the animal cruelty case:
"I am so shocked that this has happened and so shocked that someone could do this to beloved pets," the owner said.
RSPCA Inspectors are continuing to investigate the decapitation of the six chickens in a Goosens Place backyard but have ruled out a fox attack.
Earlier, the organisation said an unknown offender or group of offenders decapitated the chickens sometime between 8.30am and 2.30pm on Saturday, November 21.
A couple of the chickens' heads were thrown over a fence.
Senior Inspector Catherine Croatto said a veterinary examination of the chickens confirmed that human intervention ended their lives.
"After the veterinary examination, it was clear to see that this was an act of animal cruelty," she said.
"This matter in ongoing and I would like to encourage members of the public to come forward if they have any information."
