Opposition Leader Jeremy Hanson said on Monday his party would first hold an independent, locally-focussed inquiry into greyhound racing, to establish whether mistreatment of animals is occurring in Canberra.

If such evidence is found, the Liberals would end greyhound racing.

An extensive inquiry in NSW has already found considerable evidence of dog mistreatment and misconduct, and the RSPCA and ACT government say the territory's industry is inextricably linked with questionable NSW trainers.

RSPCA Chief executive officer Tammy Ven Dange said she had already shared their evidence with outgoing Shadow Racing and Gaming Minister Brendan Smyth.

"It's really disappointing to see the Canberra Liberals take such a stance for greyhound racing," Ms Ven Dange said.

"Such a review will only delay the inevitable as I'm confident it will support the evidence we have already presented to government."

But Mr Hanson said closing down an entire industry should not be done in an "adhoc manner", and required evidence and proper consideration.

"Without warning or consultation, Andrew Barr announced he'd close down greyhound racing in Canberra, just hours after the decision was taken in NSW," Mr Hanson said.

"Unlike Andrew Barr I don't intend to make such important decisions without having all the evidence and having given the opportunity for all sides of the debate to be considered," he said.

"Furthermore, the industry in NSW isn't due to close for a year which would give ample time to review the local ACT industry."

Last month, Ms Ven Dange used an appearance at a budget estimates committee chaired by Mr Smyth to call on the ACT government to end its $1 million annual funding for the industry.

Ms Ven Dange said the vast majority of trainers involved in races between 2011 and 2015 were from NSW, or roughly 93 per cent.

She said that 11 ACT-based races had been supervised by a former NSW greyhound chief steward who had been found to have directed others to produce misleading injury records.

One greyhound that won a major ACT race was later suspended over live baiting claims, she said, and at least seven trainers from NSW and one from Victoria with links to live baiting have raced in the ACT, she said.

"These facts cannot be ignored," Ms Ven Dange told the committee last month.

Ms Ven Dange has now called on supporters and those who "believe in animal welfare" to write to Mr Hanson.
