The 57-year-old Sydney man was fishing with his son on Lake Eucumbene, near Adaminaby, a popular Snowy Mountains fishing venue.
The pair were cruising in a small motorboat when, for reasons unknown, the father fell overboard. He has not been seen since.
His son stopped the boat immediately and dived into the water. He searched for his father for 40 minutes without success.
The son swam to shore, hoping to alert authorities, but was forced to walk for five hours before he could raise the alarm.
The search operation began at 1am yesterday, involving police from the Monaro Local Area Command, the Snowy Hydro SouthCare helicopter and Marine Rescue NSW.
The police helicopter Polair and State Emergency Service volunteers joined the search early yesterday.
The search found no trace of the man, who had been in the water well over 30 hours last night.
Authorities postponed the search at the end of light yesterday.
NSW Police will send police divers into the water to continue searching this morning.
The lake is a popular fishing spot in the Snowy Mountains and the man was on holiday from Sydney.
