Omar and his brother Saad were 17 and 14 when the Syrian Civil War began under President Bashar al-Assad, and continually protested for peace and democracy.

After Omar's arrest, the brothers managed to flee the country and gain refugee status in Melbourne.

The pair will be among the speakers at TEDxCanberra in September, where they will share their challenging journey escaping the civil war, their new life in Australia and their constant fight for peace.

The 2016 conference organisers have also announced neuroscientist Hayley Teasdale, Pip Seldon, founder of the Healthy Tradie Project, and Glenn Keys, last year's ACT nominee for Australian of the Year will feature as speakers.

Ms Teasdale, neuroscientist and PhD student at the University of Canberra, will be providing an insight into the use of non-invasive brain stimulation in an effort to combat symptoms of Parkinson's disease.

She is particularly interested in neuroplacticity, which is the brain's potential to reorganise by creating new neutral pathways to adapt.

Ms Seldon is a construction project manager, health and nutrition coach, and founded the Healthy Tradie Project after the suicide of her brother.

Her journey began in 2009 with the loss of her older brother, a carpenter. Since then, she has pushed for measures of suicide prevention in the construction industry, started Healthy Tradie Workshops and educated people about how to live physically and psychologically healthy lives.

Canberra's Glenn Keys will discuss his work as Canberra-based Aspen Medical - one of the world's leading providers of outsourced healthcare solutions - and as Chair of Project Independence, a housing initiative for people with intellectual disabilities.

Mr Keys was named the ACT's Australian of the Year in 2015 his work as both a philanthropist and a disability advocate.

Canberra band 'Lowlands' will also be making an appearance to play some jazz, blues and folk.

They will join other speakers already announced, including social justice journalist Ginger Gorman, entomologist Bryan Lessard, academic Phillip Baker, ultra-marathon runner Brad Carron-Arthur and 14-year-old award-winning singer and songwriter, Lucy Sugerman.

TED (Technology, Entertainment, Design) talks are run globally by the private nonprofit organisation Sapling Foundation, under the slogan "Ideas Worth Spreading".

This year's event will be its seventh year in Canberra and will be held on Saturday, September 3 at the Canberra Theatre Centre.

The theme for 2016 is "all in" with the full day of speakers and performers exploring the idea of what it would look like, "if we were committed 100 per cent to our lives, our families, our work, and our passions".
