The party's five lead candidates for the expanded ACT Legislative Assembly will each speak on six portfolio areas, with Mr Rattenbury's in part matching his current ministerial portfolios.

They include education, transport and infrastructure, justice, sport and recreation, industrial relations and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander affairs.

In an opinion piece on Saturday, Mr Rattenbury said the city to Gungahlin tram had been "heavily politicised" by the Liberal opposition. He said the tactics were designed to assist a negative campaign led by Opposition Leader Jeremy Hanson for the October 15 election.

"It's their version of Tony Abbott's 'no carbon tax' war," Mr Rattenbury said.

As part of the Greens' portfolio announcement, former Assembly member and Woden-Weston candidate Caroline Le Couteur will speak for the party on small business and economic development, planning, seniors, food security, animal welfare and digital policy.

Lead candidate in Belconnen and Mr Rattenbury's chief of staff Indra Esguerra will speak on health, conservation, bushfire management, multicultural affairs, arts and tourism.

Gungahlin candidate Veronica Wensing will speak for the party on housing and homelessness, urban services, community services, social inclusion, women's issues and heritage.

Tuggeranong candidate Michael Mazengarb will speak on climate change, energy and water, waste, tax, gambling, drugs and youth affairs.

The Greens named a slate of 15 candidates in October last year, predicting the party would hold the balance of power while retaining the central city seat and winning in Belconnen and Woden-Weston.

"Canberra is a progressive, forward-thinking place," Mr Rattenbury said.

"I am proud to be part of a team of fantastic candidates who will stand up for what matters and have a vision for a fairer, more sustainable and more innovative Canberra.

"Thanks in a large part to the Greens' role in the Assembly, in the past four years we have made light rail a reality, lead the country with our commitment to clean energy and delivered a very important and innovative homelessness project in the ACT with the opening of Common Ground."

He said a "people-powered election campaign" would see more Greens elected to the Assembly.

Both the Labor Party and the Canberra Liberals have named their 25-member election teams, with the parties expected to ramp up campaigning after the federal election campaign, expected to end on July 2 with a double dissolution election.

The $698 million ight rail line was a key commitment in the 2012 governance agreement signed between then Labor leader Katy Gallagher and Mr Rattenbury.

Both parties have sought to promote their progressive credentials as Chief Minister Andrew Barr attacks Mr Hanson's Liberals for what he characterises as far-right conservative beliefs.
