Firstly, start your evening early. Make sure you get to the lake early to secure a decent spot with prime viewing conditions and convenient access to all amenities. The beauty of fireworks are that they are in the sky ... so those vertically challenged individuals like myself, don't have to worry about an extra tall person sitting in front of you. However, you also don't want to be running from the City Centre mid-display because parking was a nightmare.
Speaking of parking, patience is a virtue! If you hate parking at busy events, consider catching an Action bus. Action buses are running extra services to Skyfire. Parking inspectors will be roaming the streets, issuing infringement notices for illegal parking. This also includes the grassed areas on either side of Parkes Way. Parkes Way will also be closed to all traffic immediately after the fireworks display (8:45pm-9:45pm).
There are a few parking options if you have the patience. On the north, there's Olympic Pool, various car parks along Constitution Avenue, Barrine and Wendouree Drive car parks and the Defence car park. On the south, the limited car parks off and around King Edward Terrace, Questacon and the National Library.
- Send us your Skyfire Selfies. Take a shot of you with the fireworks in the background tomorrow night and send it in to online@canberratimes.com.au, tweet us with the hashtag #CTSkyfire, tag us on Instagram @canberratimes or post it on our Facebook page for a chance to win a double pass to the Dendy Premium Lounge.
The official events for the evening begin at 4:30pm on the 104.7 stage at Regatta point with entertainment for the kids. For all those Raiders fanatics out there, brace yourself for the Canberra Raiders unveiling at 5pm.
Siobhan McGrath is the Yass High School captain as well as Skyfire's got talent winner. She will be performing at 5:15pm.
Not too sure what to bring? Here's a brief list of some handy things to pack: Picnic blankets, picnic dinner, drinking water, wet weather gear, jumper, portable chairs, portable radio and of course a smart phone to send Skyfire Selfies to us. If you don't have a picnic or need to top up, there's plenty of food options at Regatta Point.
All eyes will cast to the skies, but there's no fireworks in sight ... yet. At 6:05pm and 7:35pm the Federation Guard Display, Navy Squirrels Aerial Display and Jet Handling Display will be in full swing. Don't panic though, Canberra is not under attack ... there's just cool jets flying in the air!
For all those Summer Bay fans, Cassie Howarth (Hannah Wilson) and Tai Hara (Andy Barrett) will be signing autographs at 6:30pm. The Snowy Hydro Rescue Helicopter will also be on display.
It's the performance everyone's been waiting for ... Timomatic! The Canberra musician, singer and dancer will be performing live at 7:30pm.
At 8:27pm, Canberra will begin the 3 minute countdown. Then it's the display everyone's been waiting for - Skyfire 2014.
