So too, have the dragon boat racers who frequently skim the surface of Lake Burley Griffin.
The Canberra Times summer photo competition is now open for readers keen to capture their surrounds with a camera.
Among this season's entries were a photo of a pink sky snapped from a Macarthur rooftop after a storm, and a shimmering Lake Ginninderra as a setting sun peaked between clouds.
Graham Hine's image of the northside lake was snapped without a tripod and was the result of some interesting lighting and a bit of luck.
"I took it about 8pm and it was getting very close to the sun going down.
"I just liked the balance there with the colours and the sun and the silhouette of the tree-lined part of the lake. The lake can look very nice."
Mr Hine, who has entered the seasonal competition many times, believed January's stormy weather conditions had contributed to a run of spectacular sunsets.
Snapper Mim Forrest, of Crace, captured several images of members of The Canberra Dragon Boat Association as they held a Pirates Regatta at Lotus Bay in Yarralumla earlier this month.
With pirate capes billowing and arms pumping the paddles, the action-packed photographs showed boaters urging on their teammates as they raced to the finish line.
"This involved many people from various dragon boat clubs getting together for a fun day," Ms Forrest said.
