Officers were called to Calwell shops at about 10.20pm after reports of a fire, which ACT Fire and Rescue believe was intentionally lit.
Police were alerted to another fire in a rubbish skip at the rear of the shops later that night.
Both fires were extinguished by ACT Fire and Rescue and no structural damage was caused.
Acting Superintendent Daryl Neit said if police catch someone deliberately lighting a fire and putting life and property at risk, “they should expect to be charged and put before the court”.
People who may have witnessed the fires or seen anyone acting suspiciously in the area are urged to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
