There were two multiple-car accidents within 100 metres on the Gungahlin Drive Extension in Bruce during the morning peak hour. Two people were taken to hospital and southbound lanes blocked for nearly two hours.
The first crash involved five cars. After the second, involving four vehicles, a woman had to be cut from her car by ACT Fire crews using hydraulic rescue tools.
At lunchtime, Canberra Avenue in Queanbeyan was the scene of a multiple-vehicle accident involving a petrol tanker.
A man is believed to have lost control of his sedan as he headed east towards Tharwa Road, resulting in a collision with two vehicles.
The sedan then went on to crash into two other vehicles, and all three hit the fuel tanker.
The tanker was not damaged but two vehicles had to be towed from the scene.
The driver of the sedan was taken to Queanbeyan Hospital for medical checks, with NSW Police investigating the man's medical history as a part of their inquiries.
In the early afternoon, a 13-year-old girl was hit by a truck in Canberra's north.
The accident was in the car park of a sporting complex on Clarrie Hermes Drive in Nicholls. The girl was taken to hospital with leg injuries and the truck driver is helping ACT police with their inquiries.
The afternoon peak was worsened in Pialligo when a taxi and truck collided at the corner of Beltana Road and Pialligo Avenue, taking out a light pole and reducing traffic to one lane.
