Two boys and two girls were rescued unharmed after their Holden Commodore sedan became stuck on a four-wheel-drive track at Murrays Corner in the Pierces Creek Forest, an ACT Emergency Services spokesman said.
The group called triple-0 about 7pm but could not give firefighters their exact location, despite attempting to use GPS coordinates from their phones.
Specialist vertical rescue crews were dispatched to the location they gave before firefighter Kaye Bradtke in the ESA Communications Centre asked the caller to download the Emergency + app.
The app displays the GPS coordinates of the phone's location, which a caller can read to the emergency operator.
Firefighters were able to find the teenagers and their car stranded in rugged and steep terrain using this information and eventually winch them to safety.
