A spokesman for Sport and Recreation Services said the design had been developed by specialist heritage architect Philip Leeson in consultation with the pool manager John Taverner and the directorate.
A development application had been approved by both the ACT Planning and Land Authority and the Heritage Unit.
A project manager had been appointed and tenders were being called for the construction of the cafe which will be built at the north-eastern corner of the pool complex on a part of the lawn. Work is expected to start within weeks.
The heritage-listed pool was officially opened in 1931. The ACT Heritage Council found that the proposal was ''sympathetic to the architectural character of the heritage-listed place and unlikely to have any adverse impact''.
Meanwhile, the spokesman said an appropriate celebration of the Taverner family's dedication to the pool was planned and a tender process would be put in place to engage a new operator before the opening of the 2012-13 season in October. Megan Doherty
