Alcohol and drugs, speeding, driver distractions, intersections and not wearing a seatbelt are the top five contributors to fatal crashes in the ACT, according to Acting Superintendent of Traffic Operations Nicole Levings.

Police will be cracking down on all five of the biggest killers on ACT roads this month.

Acting Superintendent Levings said it was disappointing people were still forgetting to wear seatbelts, despite decades of public awareness campaigns.

"It should come naturally to get in the car, put your seatbelt on right now. There should be no consideration to it," Acting Superintendent Levings said.

Five people have already died on Canberra's roads this year, and Acting Superintendent Levings said police don't want to knock on another family's door.

"It is tragic that the outcome can result in deaths and the obvious impact that has on the community," she said.

"They are simple things and they can certainly change the outcome and that's important for people to take that on board and realise they don't necessarily want to contribute to the outcome that could arise from poor driving behaviour."

Also on the police's radar will be distracted drivers.

Acting Superintendent Levings said the message from ACT Policing was "to pay attention, to be aware, to continue to stay focused".

"If you are distracted by kids in the car, the phone ringing, whatever it might be, pull over, deal with that distraction and get back on the road and continue on your journey.

"People have to take some responsibility for their actions. As the driver of a motor vehicle you need ... to be aware of the consequences of what can happen."
