The Environment and Planning Directorate had prohibited cod fishing in Canberra's waterways since August.
The conservator of flora and fauna, Dr Annie Lane, said it was necessary to close the season to allow fish to spawn over the three-month period.
Dr Lane urged anglers to be aware of all rules and regulations around fishing in the capital.
"As with previous years, there is a daily bag limit of two Murray cod per person per day and a minimum legal length of 60 centimetres," she said. "However, anglers may have only one over 100cm in their possession."
Environment and Planning said fishing activities were regularly monitored, and penalties of up to $5000 applied for contravening the Fisheries Act 2000.
The current season will remain open until midnight, August 31, 2015.
