A security camera has been installed at the empty Dickson Towers public housing on Northbourne Avenue after break-ins from intruders targeting copper pipes.

The buildings have been empty since the last tenants were moved out in June to make way for the demolition of the flats, the first stage in the ACT government's plans to redevelop the string of 50-year-old public housing flats on either side of Northbourne Avenue.
A government spokesman confirmed the security camera had been installed last week, with security patrols each week night and more patrols day and night on the weekends. A security guard had disturbed intruders trying to take copper pipe, and there had been a number of break-ins over a couple of weeks, he said.
To get at pipes on the inside and outside of the buildings, intruders had smashed a number of windows and two doors, which had been boarded up.
The Government has applied for permission to demolish the buildings, but a decision is complicated by the provisional heritage listing of the flats in September.
