Thirty people were evacuated from a block of units in Griffith this morning, after a fire began on the ground floor of the building.
Fire fighters arrived to find the ground floor unit of the Stuart Flats on Light Street alight shortly after 1.20am.
A search of the building found nobody inside and the fire was extinguished before it could spread to other units.
The affected apartment was badly damaged by fire and smoke.
Three fire pumpers, breathing apparatus support van, and the HAZMAT unit and commander attended, and atmospheric monitoring was conducted before residents were allowed back into their homes.
The cause of the blaze is being investigated.
