The Bureau of Meteorology is forecasting a top temperature of 36C for Canberra with north-westerly winds and only a 5 per cent chance of rain.
The Forecast Fire Danger rating is predicted to be "severe".
The ACT Emergency Services Agency said if a fire starts, flames may be higher than roof tops, embers will be blown around and spot fires may jump up to 4 km ahead of the main fire.
The agency warned there was a chance people in the path of a fire may be injured or die, and homes and properties could be destroyed.
It reminded all ACT residents that in the case of a fire, leaving early was the safest option.
Under a total fire ban, any activity where fire is lit or used in the open air, and the use of fireworks, was not allowed without an exemption from the agency.
