Ms Cargill, pictured before the operation, who was born with an endocardial cushion defect which caused holes in her heart, shared her story with The Canberra Times last year to help raise awareness of organ and tissue donation.
The 44-year-old received a long-awaited telephone call on January 25 advising her to report to St Vincent's Hospital as soon as possible for the transplant.
The recovery process after surgery has involved a stint in intensive care and dialysis to help her kidneys resume normal functioning after the transplant. Ms Cargill will have to remain in Sydney for several months after being discharged from hospital but family members said she was already looking forward to resuming work at the Canberra Hospital.
