Cricket ACT said the closure of Indoor Sports Kambah in early June had left about a dozen teams without a place to play, returning the number of adult indoor cricket teams to the depressed levels seen after the closure of the Lyneham centre in 2012.

Fellow multi-sports centre mpowerdome in Fadden closed its doors in April.

The closures – both expected to be temporary – put pressure on Ben Santosuosso to fill some of the gap by fast-tracking the opening of his new Gungahlin indoor centre.

"We're having a few hold-ups with materials and financing, but still looking at opening this year," he said.

"Our aim is to have probably three nights of cricket – 60 cricket teams."

Mr Santosuosso also owns and operates Kaleen Indoor Sports, where he said he was turning away a lot of business.

"Player numbers have increased 100 per cent at Kaleen since the 1990s, and most of that growth has been in the last 10 years," he said.

An $150,000-plus refurbishment of the playing courts last year attracted compliments, including from Cricket ACT who had the venue booked for a visit by the Indian and New Zealand teams if rain arrived.

A review commissioned by the government last year found a "demonstrated shortage" of multi-court facilities across Canberra, particularly during the peak after-work hours on weeknights.

Minister for Sport and Recreation Yvette Berry, who took over from Shane Rattenbury in late January, said the closure of the two centres was unfortunate but she had never had any direct representation from the respective owners or management.

Gail Aiken, who managed the popular mpowerdome business until the doors closed in April, said concerns about parking – which overflowed into the adjoining government land – had hindered any deals being made with those interested in buying or leasing the land.

Her business partners own the centre and its land, she said.

The ACT government contributed $11,000 to the preparation of a parking plan, but wanted the private centre to be responsible for the overflow parking surface.

"Transport Canberra and City Services has offered a peppercorn rent to mpowerdome for the investment in the remediation and ongoing management of the overflow car parking area for the benefit of their patrons," a government spokeswoman said.

Cricket ACT indoor cricket manager Cameron Walters said more than 40 adult men's teams – the number lost due to the Lyneham closure – could be formed if facilities allowed, with sustainable female competitions also likely.

He said he was hopeful of the Kambah centre re-opening before the end of the year.

The government has committed to making more school sports centres available to the public, with the Alfred Deakin High School successfully used to fill a gap created by the Woden Basketball Stadium's closure. Ms Berry said three additional ACT government schools were being considered for improvements to increase community sporting group access.
