About 50 people were evacuated from a University of Canberra residence in Belconnen on Tuesday after a burning smell was detected.

Firefighters were called to Weeden Lodge on Chandler Street by automatic alarms about 12.30pm.

Using thermal imaging, they isolated the smell to a burnt out pump in the sprinkler valve room, an ACT Emergency Services Agency spokesman said.
The residents were evacuated as a precautionary measure and will be able to return to their rooms once atmospheric monitoring takes place, he said.
