The ACT's work safety watchdog will slap an improvement notice on the light rail project after a dangerous excavation earlier this year.

WorkSafe ACT said the unsupported three metre deep excavation had been discovered by the construction union during a site visit to the project in August.
The CFMEU notified WorkSafe, which collected safety documents about the incident.
The watchdog said it expected to issue the notice on Friday, pending review of the information.
The safety breach occurred only three months after another unsupported shallow trench collapsed onto a worker's legs after heavy rain in May.
WorkSafe attended that incident and took no further action as Canberra Metro had installed shoring to prevent further collapse.
It will be the second safety infringement issued by WorkSafe to the project, after a prohibition notice was issued last year when a worker was hospitalised from an electric shock while working on the light rail project.
The light rail contractor was using a hydrovac when he came into contact with a live electrical cable in December.
It was reported that the man was released from hospital the following day and suffered no long term effects or permanent damage.
WorkSafe said it had received reports of seven incidents - mostly minor - since construction started on the project last year.
Other safety incidents have included a trailer flipping over in July and a worker in an excavation area.
No one was injured in the other incidents.
An Access Canberra spokeswoman said none of the incidents "resulted in lost time on the project".
The Work Health and Safety Act meant all significant accidents must be reported to WorkSafe ACT.
The light rail project must also report incidents to Comcare.
Both WorkSafe ACT and Comcare inspectors conduct inspections of the site.
An Access Canberra spokeswoman said WorkSafe ACT had an extensive audit program that involved "a strong proactive approach to safety and the prevention of injury on work sites".
"This approach is consistent with the engage and educate program that is undertaken to inform industry and workers of their obligations and responsibilities including the provision of safety alerts and guidance material on high risk activities," she said.
"There is a strong commitment by all parties, workers and regulators for this project to be delivered safely for the workers involved and the broader community."
The ACT Government funded the appointment of additional WorkSafe inspectors dedicated to the light rail project in this year's budget.
WorkSafe said recruitment had started and it expected to appoint three inspectors by the end of the year.
