There were sun-kissed limbs, bold colours and fascinators throughout the grandstand and marquees of Thoroughbred Park.

Dapper gents in top hats and pinstripe suits with carnations on their lapels were wooed by the bookies while ladies in sky-high heels tottered around in dresses boasting floral prints, block neon colours and lace.

The day called for autumn trends but as the mercury tipped 30 degrees, crop tops, mini skirts and straw fascinators were more prevalent than capes, wool and heavy textures like leather and felt.

Myer ambassador, designer and Fashions on the Field judge Jayson Brunsdon said he was looking for those who ''put in the effort. The races are about dressing up and making every detail count.''

Alcohol-branded racing car T-shirts, synthetic white loafers and various sightings of denim were some of the biggest fashion faux pas from the male sector, while some females baring too much flesh and carrying too many tattoos and too many drinks kept things interesting for the excitable crowd.

Winner of the Myer Fashion on the Fields Viviane Parish charmed the judges and onlookers with her black and mustard dress by Australian fashion house Cue.

Ms Parish was ''shaking like crazy'' as her outfit featuring a straw headpiece made by her mother was announced winner of the $20,000 prize. It was the first time the 21-year-old marketing executive has entered the competition.

Eighteen-year-old Kody-Leigh Hirst took out second prize in a Karen Millen black dress and a hairpiece by Canberra's own McGlone Millinery.

Angela Menz, in a bright '60s inspired look she designed herself, was awarded the third best dressed.
