Photographer Rohan Thomson and reporter Chris Knaus have been announced as finalists in the awards, open to Australian journalists aged 26 and under.
Thomson’s work covering the recent bushfires scored him a finalist spot in the camerawork category, along with photography featuring the Moscow Circus and musician Gotye.
Knaus was announced as a finalist in the text-based journalism category for his coverage of new claims of a police cover up in one of the ACT’s oldest cold cases.
Fairfax journalists Rebecca Fleming and Ashley Argoon were also named as finalists.
The announcement, made on Tuesday, said finalists had been selected for their journalistic excellence and distinctive coverage.
Category winners will go into the running for the overall Young Australian Journalist of the Year Award, a prize which includes a trip to either the BBC in London or the CNN headquarters in Atlanta or New York.
The awards ceremony will be held at The Beresford Hotel in Sydney on July 3.
