Glen Maxwell Colefax, 32, allegedly flipped a police patrol "the bird" before leading them on a chase through Belconnen on January 18.
Mr Colefax was charged with eight offences over the alleged incident - including lighting a fire outside during a total fire ban and using an offensive weapon - when he appeared for a bail application in the ACT Magistrates Court on Friday. Police say officers were conducting a routine patrol when they spotted Colefax driving an orange Daewoo sedan.
Constable Julian Carey said Colefax ignored police signals to stop and instead conducted an illegal U-turn. The court heard police followed as the Hackett man drove in both lanes of traffic and turned into a cul-de-sac.
Constable Carey said he drew his gun after Colefax charged him while holding two containers full of incendiary liquid.
He said Colefax paused and then fled, discarding the containers which ignited. Police stopped the foot pursuit and used portable extinguishers to put out the fire.
Colefax was arrested soon after and taken to Calvary Hospital suffering burns.
The court heard Colefax told nursing staff he was arrested for trying to "kill cops" and said in a police interview he had wanted to "whale on police".
The prosecution opposed Colefax's bail application, arguing he may continue to offend and endanger public safety if released.
But Legal Aid ACT solicitor Helen Cory said her client would be willing to undertake any courses ordered by the court, including anger management classes.
Magistrate Robert Cook refused Colefax bail, saying it was alarming a police officer had been forced to draw his weapon during the incident.
Colefax will reappear next month.
