The mercury dropped to -5.1 degrees on Sunday morning, making it the second coldest start to a day this year (after the -5.5 degrees on Wednesday, June 15). It only rose above freezing - to 0.7 degrees - by 9.30am. The forecast top for the day is 11 degrees, on a mostly sunny day.
Bureau of Meteorology's Bimal KC said a cold front pushing across the capital region and Snowy Mountains means the coming week will have plenty of subzero nights.
There are more chilly starts to the days on the way: Monday is tipped to have a low of 0 degres, and Tuesday and Wednesday are expected to dip to -1 degrees.
For keen snow bunnies a dusting of snow on high peaks is due on Monday, with heavier snowfalls predicted for Thursday, Friday and Saturday for areas higher than 1000m.
Corin Forrest, less than an hour from Canberra CBD, has solid coverage and offers beginner skiing as well as tobogganing and snow play attractions.
The resort's Andrew Snell said that, after a stop-start beginning to the season after heavy rainfall, it was good to have clearer skies and cool temperatures ripe for natural snow and snow making.
"It's exciting to have skiing back in the resort after 21 years," he said. "Snow play is open as well as our new magic carpet lift. The beginner ski slope is open. We are running lessons and you can come grab all the gear and half-day pass."
More advanced skiers willing to jump on the highway will be glad to know conditions look good at all major resorts.
Thredbo had fresh snow right across the mountain from top to bottom after snowfall on Friday night.
The mountain crew report said there was 60cm at the top of the mountain, 40cm around Antons and 20cm in the village, allowing seven of 14 lifts to operate on Saturday.
Perisher resort was operating 16 lifts on Saturday and boasted a natural snow depth of 43.7cm, with 194 snowguns creating more white stuff.
The extra 5cm adding to the 70 centimetres that fell over the past week enabled all four resort areas (Guthega, Perisher Valley, Blue Cow and Smiggin Holes) to be opened.
