One of the first winners of The Chase Australia, a new general knowledge game show based on the British show of the same name, hails from Bonner and is a regular at trivia nights throughout Canberra.
Navy commander Steve Wall joined a grandmother, a PE teacher and a medical student to form the nation's most formidable trivia team.
While they lost a team member along the way, the surviving trio took home a share of $28,000.
It took seven shows before a team could overpower the combined smarts of the four Chasers – the Governess, Supernerd, the Shark and Goliath.
Mr Wall and his remaining teammates stared down the Governess – the second-ranked female quiz champion in the world and the most successful of the English Chasers from the British series – and tripped her up by putting the pressure on.
"Every time she made a mistake we capitalised on it and that led to us winning," he said.
It wasn't all smooth sailing though.
"There was a question about which film was Johnny Depp first in which I got wrong, I seem to remember the questions I got wrong better," Mr Wall said.
"There was a question about a submarine used in the civil war which I got right, thank goodness because otherwise that would have been pretty embarrassing."
The father of two trains his mind muscle at the Gungahlin Lakes Golf and Community Club every week, with his family in tow.
But don't let that put you off if you're a regular contender there, Mr Wall said.
"Everybody also has some topics they're better at. There are some areas that you're naturally better at. For me it's geography, sport and music, but other topics I'm not as confident with," he said.
Fortunately for him, it appears his children are a chip off the old block when it comes to trivial pursuits.
"The one thing about trivia is everyone knows something someone doesn't, so even the kids help out if there's a question about Pixar movies or what they're doing at school. Everyone has a skill set or interest that can help out at trivia," he said.
With Million Dollar Minute, Millionaire Hot Seat, and even Eggheads, there seems to be a glut of quiz shows on Australia television.
Mr Wall said the secret of their popularity is that everyone can see themselves winning big.
"Some people may have a broader knowledge base than others but all it takes are a couple of questions you know that someone else doesn't, especially in this format, and that can be the difference.
With his share of the winnings, Mr Wall planned to pay off some bills before taking the family on a trip to Asia.
