It's probably only in wintry weeks like this that a Londoner can see similarities between his home city and Canberra.

Public servant Kevin Thornhill, who recently swapped life in the British capital for our national capital, took a shot of a sunset over Lake Burley-Griffin on his ride home from work and entered it in The Canberra Times' winter photo competition.
It is one of 200 he’s taken on his commute to work as he's discovered the beauty of his new home.
“I wanted to share some of the magical things I’ve seen – that you see – in Canberra,” he said. “I’ve tried to capture [a picture of the lake] on a daily basis, for myself.”
Mr Thornhill said that while he missed London’s rich history and culture, he liked Canberra's mix of urban and rural areas.
“They call it a bush capital: that’s fairly apt. But Canberra has its urban places like Belconnen and Civic, and it has its natural ranges too. I often wake up at 5am to walk up Red Hill. You get really good views of Parliament House and Civic.”
One thing the two cities had in common was an identifiable winter.
“I’m not a fan of winter, and while London gets snow, Canberra’s much colder than London. Some homes here aren’t insulated either, so people adapt to the weather differently.”
But no matter the cold, for Mr Thornhill, photography’s all about finding silver linings.
“Some people haven’t stopped to take a look at what [Canberra] has to offer, some people don’t get out of the city and the places they’ve been enough,” he said. “I won’t do that. I want them to see [what they’ve overlooked].”
