It's tempting to stay snuggled up under the blankets at home through winter, but for those who brave the outside - including out on the bike - the Canberra sunrise is worth the effort.

Joe Ng, an entrant in The Canberra Times winter photo competition, took his shot of the sun rising over Scrivener Dam on his ride into work and calls it 'Definitely worth the early start'.
A public servant who cycles 40 minutes to work, Mr Ng said said he wanted to share one of the sights of his 7am commute with his wife.
“I always thought the sight of it was beautiful,” he said. “So at a point, I hopped off my bike and took a picture because I wanted to share what I got to see on a daily basis with her.”
Mr Ng hoped photos like his would his would inspire more Canberrans out into the early morning air.
“I thought if I put my photo in, I could encourage others to start cycling to work, to get healthy that way, and to get fresh air in no matter the hour, and more importantly to take in Canberra in a whole new, beautiful light,” he said.
The 16km route Mr Ng takes is, according to him, much preferable to the traffic congestion faced by drivers.
He said some of the best views of his morning were of Government House and Canberra Equestrian Park.
“It’s difficult to get enthused about getting up early, definitely, but if you’re willing and able to take a different route,” he says, “it’s a good way to experience your city.”
Morning photos are sure to feature in the competition, which runs until August 31.
