Gauges recorded rainfall on 16 days, only two behind the record of 18 set in March 1956.
It was also the fourth-warmest March on record, the mercury measuring an average minimum temperature at Canberra Airport of 12.8 degrees.
Bureau of Meteorology senior climatologist Agata Imielska said the rain and the warmth went hand-in-hand last month.
"Where there is increased cloud and increased moisture we tend to see higher night time temperatures," she said.
"It's a bit of a consistent pattern there."
A mixture of typical summer and winter rain-bearing systems brought the region its rain last month, including a low pressure trough and system responsible for heavy falls around March 21, when 22.8 mm was recorded at Canberra Airport and 36.2 mm at Tuggeranong in 24 hours.
There is a slight chance of drier conditions for April to June, although April has equal chances of wet and dry weather.
The bureau was monitoring for a possible El Nino, which has double the usual chances of developing in the second half of 2017, Ms Imielska said.
