The Giants are also targeting big-name Victorian clubs Hawthorn and Collingwood for games in the capital next year and are keen for another Friday-night fixture at Manuka Oval.

But the prospect of playing finals in Canberra is a massive boost, Matthews declaring he has "no doubt" Manuka Oval is on the Giant's radar as a finals venue.

The Giants attracted the lowest crowd since World War I when 14,865 fans turned up for a clash against West Coast two weeks ago.

Matthews said hosting the clash in Sydney made sense from a commercial perspective, but said he wouldn't hesitate in bringing a game to Canberra provided it was the right fit for Manuka Oval.

Manuka Oval's capacity of about 16,000 would be a good option for lesser drawcards in a finals clash, but Matthews is committed to bringing the big guns in for regular season games.

"If we played a final against Gold Coast or Fremantle and we were able to qualify at home, then the capacity right now at the ground would lend itself to that," Matthews said.

"It's a driver for Andrew Barr and the other stakeholders we're working with on what's the future vision for the development of the ground, what are the facilities that are needed, particularly for the average fan.

"We've got to continue to work on that aspect but there's no doubt it's a possibility. It provides a further incentive to make sure the ground continues to be developed.

"I think it would be more to do with who the opponent was."

A "sea of orange" has become the norm for Giants games in Canberra and Matthews believes the crowds will keep coming as the club looks to secure a maiden flag.

The Giants could look to capitalise on the "overwhelming success" of Friday night football in Canberra with another blockbuster under lights, with Matthews expecting updates on fixtures in the coming weeks.

He is keen to bring new clubs to Canberra with Hawthorn, Collingwood, Carlton, Sydney, Fremantle, Essendon, Adelaide, Brisbane, and West Coast yet to play the Giants for premiership points at Manuka Oval.

"We'll work close with the ACT government on the sort of requests that we might have, we're conscious that eight of the 18 clubs have played in Canberra over our fixturing here so far," Matthews said.

"We're fairly committed to try to bring some new clubs, some clubs people haven't seen before. Whatever fixture ends up being delivered of course, we do think the fact that you're coming to watch the Giants is the key thing.

"But if we can bring big clubs that would be good too."

The Giants are six years into their 10-year, $23 million partnership with the ACT government to play three premiership fixtures and a pre-season match in Canberra per year.

The Giants and the government have started talks about extending the deal into the future.

A finals game at Manuka Oval would mean an extra game in Canberra for that given year, because they can't be factored in prior to the opening week of the finals.

But Matthews is refusing to look too far ahead with the Giants "starting at the foot of Everest in round one".

"We got to base camp this year and had a crack at the summit," Matthews said.

"We're not really too focused just yet on finals scheduling for 2018, because we've just got to qualify again and put ourselves in the position.

"But if we were able to do that, and do it for the third year in a row, then home finals are always in the conversation."
