The club will on Sunday announce Farrugia as the head of a five-strong leadership group, which also includes vice-captain Emma Swanson, Maddy Collier, Jessica Dal Pos and former women's basketball star Jess Bibby.
"It's a huge honour to be named captain for the inaugural season," Farrugia said.
"I'm humbled by the opportunity and the responsibility that comes with this role. While I've got the title next to my name, I'm confident that we've got a fantastic group of players who all have their own leadership style and will share the leadership with me."
Farrugia was taken with pick No.64 as the eighth player selected by the Giants in the AFL women's draft.
She has captained Macquarie University in the Sydney competition for the past two years and was awarded the Mostyn Medal in 2015 as the league's best and fairest player.
