It is said they have had it too easy and their early success would devalue the prized premiership when clubs such as Western Bulldogs and St Kilda Saints have gone without for many decades.

If the Giants were to capitalise as a top four team and win the premiership this year they will be the fastest team to win it, having been in the league for five years.

But not by much.

The West Coast Eagles joined the league in 1987 and won the flag six years later.

Adelaide Crows were the next team to join in 1991 and won a premiership seven years later.

Brisbane Bears merged with Fitzroy Lions in 1997 and were premiers in 2001. It took them just five years and they then won the next three.

Port Adelaide Power's inaugural season was in 1997 and were the champions eight years later in 2004. And probably should have won the league earlier, having made the top four in 2001 and were minor premiers the two seasons before they eventually did.

Each team was afforded concessions to ensure they would survive in the league, but the Giants' list management has been exceptional. They benefited from a standout draft but their focus on getting games in to their young stars was obvious.

The coaching staff recruited emerging leaders to complement their draft picks and their decision to bring in Callan Ward compared to the Gold Coast's recruitment of Gary Ablett is an example of this.

Ablett is a dual Brownlow Medal winner and an undisputed superstar, but Ward is a tough, ball-winning machine and is the heart and soul of the Giants' midfield. He has led the team to where they are now.

Ditto Phil Davis, who as co-captain is emerging as a premier key backman and clever recruitment has also added Shane Mumford, Heath Shaw, Joel Patfull and Steve Johnson.

The Gold Coast Suns recruited players in the middle of their careers in attempt to be competitive from day one with players such as Nathan Bock, Jarrod Harbrow, Michael Rischitelli, and Campbell Brown.

Whereas GWS topped up their initial list with players who were at the end of their careers such as Luke Power and Dean Brogan to provide leadership and support to the young draft picks.

It has also been said the Giants are guaranteed to dominate the AFL and take the next few flags home to their base in Western Sydney, but the 18-team league is as hard to win now as it ever has been. Just two wins separated the top seven this year and more teams will emerge next year.

This sentiment belittles the AFL premiership and is disrespectful to a carefully constructed team that has blown away fans in 2016 with its raw pace and brilliance.

Even Richmond coach Damien Hardwick likened the Giants to a Lamborghini following their 88-point thrashing in round 19.

The GWS monster is alive and well, but they are their own creation and deserve to be playing in preliminary final.
