Steele has been ruled out of the Giants' clash against Richmond at Manuka Oval on Saturday as he continues his recovery from a broken hand.

But the midfielder has urged the capital to jump on the Giants' bandwagon as they chase a historic end to their season and a clean-sweep in Canberra.

The Giants are second on the ladder and can all but secure their first finals appearance if they beat Richmond in the round-19 fixture.

Steele is set to make his comeback from injury next week and admits the club's form could force him to earn selection via the Giants' reserves.

"Hopefully I can come back stronger ... I was looking forward to this game against Richmond," Steele said.

"I've played 10 games this season so hopefully I can come back and play finals, I've just got to get my head right.

"People get injured all the time and there are a bunch of boys who are out for the season, so you've got to put it in perspective.

"I'm lucky because I still have the opportunity to get back in and potentially play finals. There are some experienced guys coming back, that makes me want to play well in twos and get my run when it's time."

The Giants have shocked the competition with their stunning form, and they can take a step towards guaranteeing a finals berth if they topple the Tigers.

If they beat Richmond, it will be the first time the club has won all three of its premiership fixtures in Canberra after signing a 10-year deal with the ACT government worth $23 million.

Former Eastlake star Harrison Himmelberg has been picked in the Giants squad to play the Tigers as he attempts to follow Steele's path in just his third AFL match.

Star Ryan Griffen will bolster the Giants' squad after recovering from injury, with the former Western Bulldog replacing Adam Kennedy in the side to play the Tigers.

"We need to get some consistency with [Griffen], when he was out there he was playing some good footy," said coach Leon Cameron.

"Hopefully he can get going again because he's a really important part of our midfield and he provides an enormous amount of pressure."

Steele was recruited out of the Canberra system when he was drafted at No.24 in 2014. He has played 17 games, including 10 this season with an average of 15.5 disposals per match.

The Giants are expecting a bumper crowd for their last game of the year in the capital, but Steele wants to paint his home town orange to get fans on board for their premiership bid.

"Everyone's excited for finals and I think if we win this game and the next one we're secure [in the top eight]," Steele said.

"I don't want to jinx us, but it would be nice to know we're playing finals.

"We've got ahead of ourselves a few times this year and expected to win but it hasn't come. So I think we need to play it week-by-week and chase that spot.

"I think we've already had a few record crowds at Manuka so it would be great to see more of Canberra jump on the Giants' bandwagon ... we're growing and slowly getting better so we'd want more and more people jump on."
