Speaking ahead of the club's intra-club trial match at Henson Park on Friday afternoon, the Swans' first public hit-out since losing last year's grand final where they also lost the free-kick count 20-8, Grundy said improving the standard of umpiring was worthy of consideration.

"They've got to make some pretty tough decisions at times that can turn a game or decide a result of a game," Grundy said.

"It'd be a bloody tough job. I've never umpired and a lot of players haven't umpired but we as players make mistakes a lot of the time under pressure so you've got to take into account that those guys do as well.

"We're playing the game as a professional full-time job so in some ways it makes sense to probably put a bit more time into those guys.

"There are slight rule changes and interpretations each year that they've got to be on top of ... that makes it just as tough."

Longmire said this week that his club had spoken with the AFL about the standard of umpiring in the wake of last year's grand final loss to the Western Bulldogs. An AFL review found the umpiring to have been below the expected standard.

The coach will cast an eye over his charges in the Swans' annual intra-club trial, which Grundy will play in.

Star pair Lance Franklin and Luke Parker will miss the game as they recover from pre-season surgeries, while Aliir Aliir, Gary Rohan, Tom Papley, Jeremy Laidler, Dean Towers, Callum Sinclair and Sam Naismith are not expected to play.

Young guns Callum Mills and Isaac Heeney are expected to feature as they look to build on starring roles throughout 2016.

Ahead of his 12th season in the top league, Grundy said he had never seen two players adapt as quickly to the rigours of AFL football.

"They're probably the two players that have really stood out to me over my career, who have really made that transition look fairly comfortable," Grundy said.

"They're different players. Millsy down back looked pretty calm under pressure every week, he didn't go through a patch where he wasn't playing well. He looked comfortable every week and made that spot his.

"Isaac's super fit as we know, he's been running really well, he's been at the front of the pack all season with Dan Hannebery. He's fit and he's probably bulked up a little bit as well."

Longmire is expected to use Heeney through midfield more frequently this season, while Mills, the 2016 Rising Star, is also likely to spend more time through the middle of the ground.

"I'm sure throughout the season he's going to get looks through the midfield, he could play half forward too probably, he's pretty good in the air," Grundy said.

"That's the way the game's going, those mid-sized players have to be able to play in multiple different spots, whether it's through half forward, midfield, wing, half back. They have to be able to adapt to that for rotations.

"I wouldn't be surprised to see him more through the midfield as his career goes on."
