Which clubs could Geelong's Steve Johnson go to?

Geelong's cult favourite, a thrilling and unpredictable champion with more than 250 games of AFL football to his name, is looking for a new home.

The Cats had an aging list and Johnson is 32. Their decision to let him go was no doubt difficult, but probably also the right call.

He told The Footy Show on Thursday night he wanted to play again, if he felt he could be useful to the club that chose him. We reckon his options are limited, but former Essendon coach Kevin Sheedy says clubs should be queuing up for his services.

"If I was coaching Essendon in my day, I wouldn't hesitate," Sheedy told SEN on Friday.

"I never worry about the birth date of a person. I'd just need to know that he wanted to play.

"Just imagine if he was in the Richmond team right now ... with the Kangaroos and Richmond final Stevie J could be the person that, when it's in the balance, could win that game."

Which clubs should consider recruiting Stevie J for next year?

Richmond

As Jake Niall wrote in August, the Tigers are one club that could benefit from Johnson's on-field tricks.

To take on a player so close to the end of his career, a team would almost certainly need to feel they are closing in on a premiership. Their forward line could use some extra fire-power and Richmond's head of football, Dan Richardson, knows Johnson well and could handle his quirks.

The Western Bulldogs

With a famously young list, the Doggies could perhaps benefit from the experience of Stevie J.

They have already surprised the footballing world by making the final eight with a full-on, attacking style of football. Should they fall short this year, they will be looking to make a stronger push into the finals in 2016 and Johnson has three premierships to his name.

Greater Western Sydney

The Giants wanted Johnson at the end of 2014, but a lot changes in a year. The expansion club showed significant improvement without Stevie and are unlikely to make him another offer now. If they do, it may be for one playing year with the possibility of transitioning into an assistant coaching position down the track.

Elsewhere

Should he be willing to entertain a significant pay cut, another club may be willing to pick him up cheaply, hoping to get a decent year or two out of Stevie J.

"I probably wouldn't be welcome back at Geelong if I was to go to a Hawthorn but I'm not going to say no to anything," he said on Thursday night.
