According to data published by the Australian Bureau of Statistics on Thursday, the average Canberran earned $1736 every ordinary week during the first half of 2015.

This was a $15 increase on the November 2014 results and $251 more than the national average of $1484.50 a week ($77,194 a year).

On average, adult men earned $321 a week more than women in the ACT.

Nationally, the average full-time adult wage increased by 2 per cent while total earnings increased by 1.8 percent to $1545.60 a week.

Commsec chief economist Craig James said the data confirmed wages were only growing modestly and the Reserve Bank should be in no rush to change interest rates.

"The average worker has an extra $1500 in the pocket compared with a year ago, equating to an extra $29 a week," he said.

"While modest real wage growth causes consumers to price-check more often, the modest growth in earnings restrains the wage bill of employers leaving them inclined to maintain or boost employment over 2015/16."

Last month, the ACT unemployment rate dropped for the eighth consecutive month with business leaders confident the economy is recovering from public service cuts.

Bureau figures revealed the territory's trend unemployment rate fell to 4.1 per cent in June while the participation rate remained stable at 70.1 per cent.

Western Australian workers earned slightly more per ordinary working week at $1691.20, which was an increase of $18 previous figures.

Nationally, wages in the retail, financial services and manufacturing sector all increased between 3.6 and 5.9 per cent while the highest average wage of $131,888 per year was in the mining sector.

The lowest average wage was for workers in the accommodation and food services sector at $55,162 followed by $57,273 in the retail sector.

"Remarkably it is workers employed in retailing that appear to have done best over the past year with the average wage up almost 6 per cent," Mr James said.

"By contrast, wages in the previously high-flying mining sector rose by 1.7 per cent over the year."

Mr James said wage data was known to fluctuate from quarter to quarter although modest growth was one reason why the unemployment rate had remained relatively stable this year.

In June, ACT Chief Minister and Treasurer Andrew Barr said the government had worked hard to ensure the economy remained resilient despite more than 8000 job losses in the public service.

"Throughout this period, the ACT's population has grown steadily, which highlights the resilience of the territory to absorb the APS job cuts," he said.
