Back when newspapers were newspapers, the then prime minister, John Howard, was explaining to the owner of The Canberra Times that it was, in his opinion, the worst metropolitan daily in Australia, worse than the Sydney Morning Herald, even worse (shudder) than The Age. The Canberra Times was, he declared, like "the ABC in print".
