Few people build or inherit large fortunes or succeed in indulging in a lifestyle of wealth and privilege. But being dreamers, we've all envisioned what it might be like. Invariably, we imagine that a life of affluence would free us from everyday worries and give us the choices necessary to make us happy, content and fulfilled. The Canberra woman who won $50 million in Thursday's Powerball draw will be widely envied for precisely that reason. Yet, far from gratification and contentment, great wealth frequently appears to bring about the opposite: corrupting our values, warping our judgment, heightening our insecurities and fears, blinding us to our weaknesses, and hardening our hearts, even towards family and friends.
