Holes in Abbott's boat plan are clear

Eschewing the blustery slogans for which he has been so roundly criticised during his term as Opposition Leader, Tony Abbott set out the Coalition's policy on asylum seekers in greater detail on Thursday. Mr Abbott's well-honed tough-on-boat-people attitude was still very evident, however. He would, he said, put a senior (three-star) commander in charge of a military-led campaign to secure Australia's borders, and "where it was safe to do so'', those asylum-seeker boats setting out for Christmas Island would be turned back. By characterising the policy as a response to "a national emergency'' - and by cloaking it in military garb - Mr Abbott has underlined his determination not to be outflanked on this issue by Labor, though in doing so he may well be making a rod for his own back at some future point in a Coalition government.
