The significance of Christmas

As the name implies, Christmas is ultimately a celebration about Jesus Christ. Without him there would be no Christmas. But in the shadow of atrocious violence in 2014 to celebrate may seem confusing and inappropriate. We have recently been horrified by events in the Lindt Cafe, where the sign in the window ironically wished passersby a Merry Christmas. After such events how can Christmas possibly be "merry"? The answer is to seek a deeper spiritual significance, looking beyond later loveable cultural traditions which can obscure why Christians started celebrating the birth of their founder.
