Updated April 23 2018 - 10:23pm, first published March 29 2015 - 7:02pm

The article "Family violence offenders walk free" (March 25, p1) reveals nine cases of family violence in Canberra every day of the year. This is a sobering statistic. The story also describes abusers who regularly breach apprehended violence orders and get away with it because magistrates let them off with a virtual slap on the wrist. It is time for mandatory sentencing for offenders, starting with the first breach. A "three-strikes and you're out" approach to sentencing would be appropriate.
