Meagre support for artists in Canberra

The response of many Canberra artists to funding cuts ("Funding cut leaves arts community in shock", December 23, p2) is disturbing and poses the question: are the philistines increasingly in charge of the ACT Government? While it heavily subsidises the substantial income of elite players in major sporting codes the Government provides but a meagre amount to elite artists, and it appears even that is to be drastically reduced. Talk of a major new stadium and an improved Manuka stadium remains on the agenda but no such interest in an enlarged theatre! It is interesting to read of Vicki Dunne's support of artists as it reflects a conversion from the previous Liberal Party rubbishing of Jon Stanhope's important public art program. If Liberal policy is ahead of Labor on the arts then Labor needs to look carefully at its arts policy.
