These questions came up at a lunch with friends last week. So I found an EL1 profile on the Australian Public Service Commission website and addressed a few of the selection criteria using only the skills I've built as the "project manager" of a family.

Would you hire me?

1. Commits to action

When I recently grew fed up with having half-conversations with my husband and children because their faces were glued to their mobile devices, I took swift action. I called a meeting over sausages and vegetables to voice my concerns around excessive screen time.

I implemented the household's first Devices Down! program which was launched by the Minister of Doing Bloody Everything (me) later that night. I managed an amnesty of all mobile devices and ensured they were appropriately secured while the family participated in a game of Yahtzee.

While the program failed to secure support and funding beyond its initial roll-out, I consider the three hours it ran for in total a real highlight of my career as a mother.

2. Negotiates persuasively

A first class example of my ability to negotiate persuasively was my recent win in a debate with my husband on whether or not we needed a cleaner. Instead of spending hours in frustrating and heated conversation, I strategically refused to clean the shower for a month and the toilets for two weeks.

Rather than actually clean said bathroom utilities, my husband once again broached the subject with me and agreed to implement the Magic for Mums service in our home.

3. Values individual differences and diversity

The diversity and individual differences within our household are never more evident than when we sit together each night for a meal. One person is always upset that I've forgotten they hate peas, while one develops a sudden allergy to carrots and someone else claims "you never said we were having this".

Planning meals for people with diverse tastes is always a challenge and I have worked hard to develop strategies to make mealtime more pleasant. Firstly, I manage the expectations of all stakeholders by announcing exactly what will be served at the dinner table and when.

Secondly, I have learnt from past mistakes. I never include anything "small and slimey" (like onion or mushrooms) in the meals of those who have specifically requested these things be removed. In my household, that's everyone 13 and under.

Finally, I have implemented a No dinner, no dessert policy where failure to complete a meal results in exclusion from extra-curricular eating of ice cream and Gaiety biscuits. This third policy has proven the most successful.

4. Steers and implements change and deals with uncertainty

When Netflix was introduced into our house in late 2014 it was a dark and uncertain time. Lounge Room 2.0 had recently been rolled out in our home, with brand new hardware (a Samsung smart television) and software (including Amazon Video, Pandora and Spotify) suddenly available to the team.

When my Acting EL2 (my husband) refused to read the manual or do any research, I took matters into my own hands. Within 30 minutes I had set up Netflix accounts for my entire team and even allocated one of those emoji thingymajigs for each person.

I conducted training from the lounge, educating the team (including the useless Acting EL2) on accessing their accounts, how to search, and the benefits of the 'Because you watched ... ' recommendation engine.

5. Shows personal courage and engages with risk

Displaying personal courage is a daily activity for me.

Simply peeling the doona off on a cold Canberra morning to an alarm clock of "Mum! I need clean undies!" and "Where's my maths book?" is an act of extreme courage.

(Add to that my anxiety telling me the kids probably have cancer and that one day soon The Canberra Times will discover I'm a fraud and I could be described as Queanbeyan's answer to Wonder Woman.)

In terms of engaging with risk, my most recent example of this was last week when I made the unfortunate mistake of drinking on a school night. The Dinner with the A-team project commenced at XO in Narrabundah at 1800 and by 2100 I was forced to assess the risk of drinking five more espresso martinis against the potential ramifications of minor alcohol poisoning the next day.

I consumed the martinis and then further pushed the boundaries by ending up at 88mph at 2300 on a Wednesday night.

I expertly managed the fall-out the next day with a strategic fillet burger and chips (with extra chicken salt) from KFC and a sneaky lunchtime nap in the car.
