OK, that's probably not exactly right. I'm guessing millions of Australians hope Trump will not be the next President of the United States. They may also be hoping they never have to see another reality television show with the Donald.

But some Australians have gone much further than that, Fifteen thousand kilometres further. They are now in the US working on the campaign for Hillary Clinton. They can't vote. They don't get paid. But there is nothing they want more than to ensure it's President Clinton and not President Trump. They are prepared to travel – even if they've never heard of their destination.

The minute Donald Trump was confirmed as the Republican Party's nominee for president, Ange Humphries, of Sydney, rang some old friends in the US who had connections in the Democratic Party. They had all volunteered during Clinton's campaign in New York for the Senate. Humphries loves New York and the combination of the charms of the Big Apple and the opportunity to defeat Trump was all too alluring.

But she was pretty bluntly told she wasn't wanted. At least not in New York.

Instead, eight days ago at 7pm on a Monday, she landed in the US, leaving behind her darling husband, her darling daughter, her darling parents.

Her destination? Tampa.

"I really didn't want to come here. I knew nobody in Tampa, I didn't even know where Tampa was."

Tampa, Florida.

Florida, the key swing state in the 2000 election. It's where Al Gore oh so narrowly lost to George W Bush in 2000 in a dispute finally resolved in the Supreme Court. Florida: one of a handful of key states in 2016.

And after one week of volunteering, Humphries knew it was absolutely the right place to be.

Gore expressed it best to young Floridians earlier this month: "Your vote really, really, really counts – a lot. You can consider me as an exhibit A of that group."

And that's why Humphries is working long, long days, calling prospective voters about the election. The people she's ringing are already thinking Democrat. Now she wants to make sure they will vote. In the US, it's called Get Out The Vote. Voting is not mandatory so there is not the same turnout, half of a political party's campaigning is about making sure people turn up to vote.

"Hi, my name is Ange, I am from the Voter Protection Team on behalf of Hillary Clinton."

There is no register of Australians volunteering on the Democrat campaign. But in the course of this story, I found lawyers, students, lobbyists, writers, all over the US. They are mainly organising people to remember to vote – to get out and vote – and just as in Australia's most recent federal election, there has already been a huge turnout in early voting.

Todd St Vrain is in the thick of it. He has fielded calls all year from Australians wanting to help and St Vrain, chair of the Australian chapter of Democrats Abroad, has done what he can to provide passionate volunteers with the ways and means to do exactly that.

St Vrain says that so many Australians have told him they feel we should be able to vote in the US elections because there is so much at stake. So it's no surprise to him that Australians are rushing to volunteer.

"It's heartening that so many Australians care about the outcome of our election," he says.

Australia is not the only place sending help – he says it's happened in Democrats Abroad chapters all over the world.

About 1600km north of where Humphries sits in Florida, Elizabeth Everett Cage, who has dual US-Australian citizenship, is part of the volunteer leadership team in old town Alexandria, in Virginia. When she signed up, Virginia looked like it would be more what Americans call, "in play". Now it looks good to vote in a Democrat president.

But that's just the polls; and Everett Cage wants more. She describes herself as culturally Jewish but not someone who had ever engaged much with the Holocaust. But she took a mid-life gap year and went to Europe.

"One of the things I discovered is exactly how Nazism began. In the beginning it was a movement of men who could articulate it in a way that [appealed] to the citizens. I was really struck by the parallels.

"The Republicans nominated Donald J Trump who has shown himself to be, if not a fascist, then [someone who] has fascist and authoritarian leanings."

She had the time, the space and the financial capacity to volunteer so she did.

And Everett Cage says there is still time to volunteer. You can turn up to any campaign office and help out. There's not the same distrust of strangers volunteering on campaigns as there is in Australia.. She's suggesting Arizona, Nevada, Utah, Georgia. Those are the states which really need help.

She says: "Anyone who is thinking about coming to help, should come and help. There has never been an election like this in the US and hopefully there will never be another one."

And how do Americans feel when faced with Australian accents.

They are surprised, impressed and, occasionally, take the opportunity to tease.

After Humphries introduced herself on the phone, the voter she rang replied: "Wait ... what's with the accent? You are not from 'round here are you?"

"No sir. I am from Australia. I am in Florida just helping out."

And he said: "Keep talking, you sound like a cartoon."

Now that voter is volunteering too.
