Cottrell has conceded her pet sport won’t be an Olympic event while she’s still bowling, and with a Commonwealth Games silver medal now in her possession, she is now keen to pursue other avenues in life.

She was part of the Australian women’s triples team beaten 22-4 by England in the final on Thursday night, alongside Karen Murphy and Lynsey Clarke.

After cruising into the gold medal game, it was a slightly sour end to the team’s time in Glasgow and it’ll likely prove Cottrell’s last Commonwealth Games appearance.

“As a kid grown up watching the Olympics I’ve always wanted to go, so I’ve always thought that my only chance was to get a media gig or a sports management role with a team,” Cottrell said.

“I’ve got a journalism degree but I enjoyed the sports management side of it as well, so maybe there’s a possibility I might do some more study and get some business background.

“Mum wants me to do everything all at once she doesn’t want me to quit at all.

“When I get back I’ll start looking for a job and if I don’t get a job I’ll be able to keep bowling.

“I’m just playing it by ear at the moment. I’ll know more by the end of the year how my job front’s looking.”

Cottrell’s Games started poorly when she failed to advance from the group stage in the lawn bowls singles, despite being well favoured to land a medal.

But the triples skip bounced back instantly playing a key role and navigating Australia’s passage through to the sliver medal.

“The good thing is I haven’t really needed to worry about it [the singles] because we just jumped straight into the triples,” Cottrell said.

“We started off with a win in the triples, so it’s kind of all forgotten now.

“[The singles were] a bit of a bummer, I suppose. It’s not the result I wanted but having the triples to back up [helped]."
